The R.O.S.E.S. Have T.H.O.R.N.S.
Part Two
Since the Calvinists have simplified their theology in the form of a 'TULIP' and they have provided a defense against Arminianism in the form of a "DAISY", I would like to now interject my acronyms concerning both the good and the bad things that have been born out of the Pentecostal / Charismatic movements. First of all, I would like to talk about the good things that have came out of the Pentecostal / Charismatic movements. To discuss these things, I would like to interject an acronym that I will call "ROSES" as the basic foundational points of good things that came about because of the Pentecostal / Charismatic movements. ROSES, in reference to the good things that came out of the Pentecostal / Charismatic movements, is defined as:
- R = Restoration of the Holy Spirit.
- O = Omnipresence, omniscience, and Omnipotence were rediscovered
- S = Spiritual Gifts re-learned and re-activated.
- E = Exaltation of God re-implemented.
- S = Spiritual Warfare revealed again.
From the death of the last original apostle approximately 60 AD to the origins of the Pentecostal movement in the early 1900's, we saw an absence of the move of the Holy Spirit within the church. The Holy Spirit itself did not die or went into exile as Cessationalists or Preterists wish to believe. Instead, the church dealt with other issues ranging in everything from who was in authority after the death of the apostles, corruption of the priests that led to the protestant reformation, and the rationalization of the enlightenment that led to the Wesleyan Holiness movement. In fact, I personally believe that it was the working of the Holy Spirit that led to the rising up of men and women that were instrumental in the shaping of today's Christianity.
Concerning the "R" in the acronym mentioned above, we saw the restoration of the Holy Spirit as an equal and important part of the Trinity as the first Pentecostals of the early 1900's experienced the impartation of supernatural power upon their lives that also manifested via the action of 'speaking in tongues'. In fact, most of these people who pioneered this move of God were primary Methodists and Baptists from the Wesleyan Holiness movement that were looking for a fresh anointing from God to reach their world for Jesus.
Concerning the "O" in the acronym mentioned above, we saw the concepts of omnipresence, omniscience, and omnipotence rediscovered. Looking at church history between 60 AM and 1900, we see a church that struggled for it's very existence from the crusades, major splits between the Catholics and Orthodoxy, schisms between the Catholics and the Protestants, and the ages of reason and enlightenment where the good of science and knowledge was attempting to exalt itself above God. It was through the first Pentecostals of the early 1900's that we began once again to realize that God was present at all places at all times, that God knew all things, and that God was unlimited in power and authority. This was brought about by the move of God during the holiness movement of the 1700's through the late 1800's. Why do I say this? Because it took a stirring of God of establishing personal holiness in the lives of His believers in order to implement a concept of power, authority, and victory in the life of the believer. When the Pentecostal church discovered omnipresence, omniscience, and omnipotence, it was instrumental along with the holiness in the believer's lives to bring forth victory and a church that was heading back towards being an Acts based New Testament church.
Concerning the first "S" in the acronym mentioned above, we saw the re-learning of the Spiritual gifts that were practiced in the early church and discussed in 1 Corinthians 12 and 14. The church saw the flow of such spiritual gifts such as wisdom, apostleship, prophets, teachers, pastors, evangelists, healing, helps, etc. in action. Even though the holiness movement practiced the gift of divine healing, it was the Pentecostals that experienced the practicing of these spiritual gifts that brought this teaching back into the church.
Concerning the "E" in the acronym mentioned above, we saw the exaltation of God in ways never expressed before. The holiness movement used hymns to put into music sound basic biblical doctrines. However, the Pentecostals placed into music songs that offered up praise and adoration to God. The holiness were very instrumental in expressing doctrine outward to the world. However, the Pentecostals were instrumental in beginning the restoration of praise and worship to God through psalms and spiritual songs, These songs not only expressed their praise to God outward to the world but also expressed that praise to God inwardly and intimately between God and man in a personal matter.
Concerning the last "S" in the acronym mentioned above, we saw the re-implemtation of Spiritual Warfare per Ephesians 6:12. Where the sermons of the past dealt with the holiness and the corruption of the church in the physical realm, the sermons of the Pentecostals dealt with obtaining victory over demonic principalities in the Spiritual realm. We began to see once again in full force the casting out of devils, binding up evil spirits, and the need for renewing our mind and to put on the full armor of God.
Even though the Pentecostal / Charismatic Church were very instrumental in the restoration of the concepts mentioned in my 'ROSES' acronym, there were mistakes made in the Pentecostal / Charismatic movement that led to the propagation of some erroneous teachings within that movement. I fully realize and have come to the conclusion that abuses will never be nonexistent in any move of God. True leaders of a move of God will try their best to keep a balanced approach to prevent others from bringing shame and disgrace upon that particular move of God. However, extremes do happen because of three main things:
- People not Biblically taught and therefore not able to discern truth from untruths.
- Biblically taught people that are spiritually immature and may or may not be emotionally unstable that cannot properly handle the truth. Therefore, they do weird things that are out of order calling it 'truth'
- The 'snake-oil' salesman and Charismatic charlatans who are false ministers motivated by personal greed and a desire to become famous and financially wealthy off of a move of God. These people had a 'form' of Godliness but denied the power of God.
